Brian Tierney, Managing Director, Americas Division Head of First Line Operational Risk, Controls and Resilience at SMBC since August 2023. In this role, Brian is responsible for the Business/Functional Control Officers, the Business Continuity Management Team, the Operational Resilience Office and the Enterprise Resilience Exercise Team. This collection of teams ensures SMBC partners with the business owners and managers to identify their risks and controls, address regulatory change management as well as issues remediation. In addition, the teams ensure preparedness from a continuity perspective and that SMBC delivers operations, including critical operations and core business lines, through a disruption from any hazard. Prior to SMBC, he led the Operational Risk Practices team at Royal Bank of Canada. In this global role Brian was responsible for the development, maintenance, and monitoring of operational risk programs with associated tools and methodology. Brian’s role covered Operational Risk Events, Scenario Analysis, KRIs, External Events, Change Initiative Risk Assessments, and Issue, Action and Risk Acceptance Management. Before moving to this global role at RBC, Brian was US Head of Operational Risk responsible for the advisory and oversight of RBC’s combined US operations, which included challenge of operational risk program outputs, risk reporting and loss estimation for CCAR production as well as for the Capital Markets segment globally. Prior to RBC, Brian served as Chief Administrative Officer at FNY Securities where he directed the day to day running of the firm, overseeing finance, operations, compliance and technology, which supported the firm’s five distinct trading strategies. His experience also includes eight years at Millennium Partners, a multi-strategy hedge fund, where Brian served as Head of Counterparty Risk in the Office of the COO and was accountable for a broad set of responsibilities including project management and leadership across counterparty risk, treasury, operations, account, risk and investor relations. Brian has an undergraduate degree in Accounting from Villanova University and a masters in business administration from Harvard University.
